The UK's Magazine Industry

In the UK there is more than 8000 magazines published every year. The main Publishers are BAUER who publishes 25% of the industry and IPC media who published 20%. 1.4 billion magazines are sold every year and 85% of the British population reads a magazine, spending 2 billion pounds on them every year. The magazine industry is a very volatile industry with about 500 new magazines being released every year yet only 3 out of 10 survive after the first year, so it is a very harsh and demanding industry where is it hard to judge the market. brands that are currently big in the industry are men's lifestyle magazines like NUTS and EMPIRE or women life style magazines like NOW, CLOSER, HEAT or music magazines like ROLLING STONE, CLASH and Q. It is arguable that the female demographic dominates the Magazine industry as they are more likely to sit down as they have more uses and gratifications for the magazines, however there are a wide variety aimed at the male audience also. The impact of the internet and new technologies such as the iPad and Android phones have had on the magazine industry is not only to transform it but also to destroy it. Many magazines can not cope with the new ability to find instant gossip and not wait for a week to receive it in a magazine. others have developed with the times and have introduced online magazines or have synergy with a webpage connected to their magazines to keep them modem and relevant. Some company are going as far as to be an exclusively online magazine and i personally think that this is the future of the magazine industry.

Process of Construction

Rejected Versions of my Final product

These are disregarded drafts for my final piece/ front cover for my product. I disregarded them at these stages because i felt that the key signifying image was not strong enough and would not be as attractive to my target audience as they did not have the connotations that my target audience would be able to identify with. I felt that the fist one with the use of the close up shot was too intent on using direct address to involve the audience in my product and this would actually scare them away, and then in my second one i experimented with using indirect address and i feel that this looked immature and was not a powerful image to attract my target audiences attention.

Draft Double page Spread

Mayaa

This years most innovative and inspiring young singer songwriter.

The haunting tunes of Myas latest hit song echo around our heads as we approach the formidible and dark 16th century castle, where we are holding our exclusive interveiw. This needless to say makes the whole meeting feel mysterious and spooky at first, however Once we are set up and ready the mood switches to one of excitement and anticipation of Mayaa's arival. Mayaa is shy at first but soon her passion for music and the true authenticity of her persona bursts from her, lighting up her eyes and our hearts.

So Mayaa your Debut album (softly spoken) Hit number one, was that a supprise?
well yes, yes it truly was, I mean, it is so different isn't it? from everything else out there. I suppose that was the beauty of it, it was a breath of fresh air to people. I wanted them to get lost in the music and they have, its all i have ever wanted.

Yes your music is different, May we say haunting?
[laughs] Haunting, yes, I have heard that a lot actually, I think people must think i am Depressed or something awful like that, but i am not! The tunes are lilting and haunting as you say but the lyrics are powerful and inspiring. It is ment to be empowering i suppose.

Is there any personal messege behind the lyrics then?
Oh i knew that I was going to be asked this at some point [Mayaa pauses and looks into her lap] When i was younger i was bullied. I don't know if you ever were, but it makes you feel so small, so insignificant and alone. Its horrible. So the lyrics are the things i want to tell my past self, to reassure her and make her stronger.

What is it like to be thrown into fame like this?
Oh its so strange! I was always the wall flower that nobody really saw so its such a change. I feel as though i am dreaming, its the most beautifully chaotic dream I have ever had. so strange, yes, but in a good way.

What does it mean to you to have become so successful?
what does it mean? Oh well its a life long dream come true, I have always been a singer for as long as i can remember, however I could never sing the 'Poular' songs. So people told me i would never achieve my dream of being a star. Well I have certainally proved them wrong [laughs] Its just so lovely to have become bigger than i ever dreamed of.

Its not just your music that has captivated people is it?
No, Its what I wear, I have no idea why but people are copying the way i dress! I have unintentionally become a style icon [laughs] oh , that sounded vain, sorry. I love my clothes and i am extreemly flattered that so many other people like them also.

Is it true that Vogue wants you to be there January cover?
Yes, it is! i couldnt believe it, all of the cover girls are totally flawless and i don't even consider myself attractive so to say it was a shock to recieve that call, is an understatement.

If you don't mind us saying, you are very well spoken considering you come from norfolk.
Really?! I suppose there is the common missundertsnding that anybody from norfolk is a unintelligent, Inbred, Idiot, isn't there? I know that growing up my mother would make sure that my brothers and I all spoke correct English, old habits stick I guess.

You are the only Girl?
Ah yes, I am. Its not a bad thing. My family is my life support, I love them all so incredibly much. Growing up with Boys made me that bit more competitive and I am used to taking the heat from people because of all the trouble we used to get into. That has helped me so much in getting to where i am now i suppose.

So what do you have planned for the future?
Well, Because my album has done so well, I am going to do a five or six month tour around europe. Then I will most probably get straight back into the studio and start recording a new album. I am definitly not going to turn down anything that comes my way, you only live once, and right now it feels as though i have just started living.

As Mayaa got up and in her unique airy fashion kissed us all goodbye, We here at GRANDE  couldn't help but feel that a true star had just brightened up the world.

Photoshoot Organisation

For my photoshoot I wanted to find a female model for my front cover. My photoshoot plan was to have a mid to close up shot (experimenting with low angle shots to convey power and prestigue) I will need a model who looks late teens to early twenties, the same age reange of my target audience, encoraging them to identify with her. I want a very simple image which is eyecatching. I plan to have my model wearing a dark colour which will either be a dress or a formal top. This is so that the attention stays on the face of the model and also makes her look more formal and attractive to my target audience. I do not want props and i will be shooting on a plain background. I will experiment with my models facial expressions however I currently think that a serious or inquisitive look is what i will be going for however i may expreiment with joy and smirks however i think that these will have negative connotations to my audience. I want the model to have direct adress with my audience and therefore to make this stand out I will have the eyes as the main focus of the shoot.

Front Cover Drafts

My first Cover draft has a close up low angle cover image of a lady with long loose hair, she is covering the mast head suggesting that the contents is more important than the brand, her indirect adress would appeal to my target audience because it suggests that the magazine does not need to draw people in because the already have a conssumer base suggesting that the reader/ audience is already 'in the club' she would be wearing a black polo top as this would make the main coverline in white pop out of the page and grab the audiences attention. The main cover line would be in a Serif font to make it look more classy and thereofre more appealing to the audience's ideals. Allong the top of the page i would have a white on black strapline with a sans serif font maing it look blocky and eyecatching, the strap would also be partially covered by the cover image. The Mast Head would be a deep red serif font on  the white background, it would be red because red has connotations of passion and velvet which is a very rich material and therefore appealing to the ideals of the audience. I would also have a Black on Red coverline box on the left hand side of the image, the red box would be in the same colour as the Masthead making a visible link between the brand and the contents of the magazine. I have aslo put a right justified coverline on the right hand side of the cover to make the cover look more busy and full therefore suggesting that the magazine will be crowded. The barcode, issue number and price is on the bottom left hand corner so it does not take too much attention away from the rest of the cover. The dominant colours within the cover will be red white and black, white with connotations of purity, black with connotations of mystery and Red with connotations of passion, these are all ideals that my target audience loks for.

My seccond Cover Draft has a cover image of two female musicians, lng distance low angle shot giving the subject of the image power over the audience, the main cover image is partially covering the mast head/tital block suggesting that the contents is more important than the brand therefore broadcasting there cofidence in the quality of the magazine. the two musicians will have direct adress with the audience drawing them into the magazine. The two musicians will either be dressed in long dark dresses or the image will be shot in black and white. The main cover line will be in a serif font in the same color as the text in the mast head to make a clear link between the main focus of that magazine and the brand this suggest a quality to the audience because the brand is asscociating itself with it. I will have a black on red strap line with the red box in te same colour as the mast head, the text will be serif making a statement about the class and glamour of the magazine. The mast head will be a dark red or purple serif font on a black box to make it bold and stand out. on the right hand side of the cover i will have a black box with red text in it in the same colour as the masthead/main cover line and the strap to tie them all together. on the left hand side of the cover i will have a mid shot of a woman as a puff as to what else is in the magazine with a left justifiend coverline as an anchor for it. in the top right hand corner of my cover i will have a centre justified cover line with the number 100 in it which has connotations of 100% and perfection which will appeal to my audience.

My third Cover draft has a big close up, straight o n shot of a female singer, the singer will be wearing a bowtie and a top hat and the image will be shot in black and white leving only her red lips in colour. The Mast Head will lay across the top hat in the cover imge leaving the face of the singer clear so that her eyes are the focus point making the direct adress successfull. The strapline will be white capital sans serif font on a black box so that it stands out with the magazins motto. The Mast Head will be in either a deep red or purple in a serif font across the top third of the magazine cover so that is it shouting out the brands name, this has conotations of the magazine being something that people should be proud of being seen with, that it is a desirabl accessory, this will appeal to the aspirers in my target audience. The Main cover line will be a serif font that is different from the mast head but in the same colour tiying the brand to the focal contents of the magazine. The coverlines on my cover will be black serif fonts either right or left justified depending on where they are on the cover.

Initial Ideas for My Music Magazine

I have decided to call my music magazine 'Grande' which is French for Loud, big or important. I chose this name because is it short and easy to remember. The name is French and therefore has connotations of seductive class which will appeal to my target audiences ideals. The title relates to the music industry because it translates into English as 'loud' however its other translations will appeal to the ideologies of my target audience and acts as a window for how they view themselves in society.

My target audience is Females aged 18 to 28 who have job in types A or B with a high income. My target audiences psychographic profile is that they are fashion orientated, high achieving business women who are either Aspirers or succeeders. The magazine will appeal to them as it will be classy enough to be a fashion statement which will appeal to the aspirers who want to show off their power however it will be understated enough to appeal to the succeeders who want quality rather than big brands.

I have decided to price my magazine at £3.90, this price means that it is a substantial enough amount of money that the only people who would buy it regularly would be those who can afford it, this would be appeal to the Aspirers who would feel more exclusive and therefore having the magazine would be more of a statement. The price is not so high that it would scare off people who do not want to waste there money, it would just suggest that the quality of the magazine was high therefore appealing to the Succeeders.

The magazine will be Published Monthly because I think that this allows the magazine to have a larger more select content than a weekly magazine would have and also if it was weekly then the target audience may get bored as the magazine would be repeating itself.

In The magazine, the content that I am thinking of having would be in depth interviews with powerful women within the music industry like Adele as this would give my primarily female audience the chance to identify with the celebrities. I would also have reviews of up and coming artists, but mainly ones that are expected to become 'big' in the industry so that my audience was ahead of the game and this would appeal to them because of there position in power and therefore there desire for knowledge. I would also have a section reviewing technologies used within the music industry that would also be useful to the powerful working woman. I would have profiles and inside information on the music industry itself and the powers behind the music like record labels etc. this would appeal to my target audience because they want more than any other person. I would have an section on the fashion in the music industry as this would be important to my target audience (looking good and being on trend). Finally i will have features on a musical artist of different genres each month about how they became the best at what they do. This will appeal to my audience as they will be able to identify with the artists.

The style of my magazine will be stylish and very upper class to cater for the over achievers in life and those who aspire to be great. It will be 'The Vogue of Music Magazines' This style will appeal to my target audience as it will be the highest quality which will equal there opinions of themselves.

My USP will be that it is the only magazine aimed at high achieving women. This is taking a Niche in the market and therefore it hopefully stand out.
