The UK's Magazine Industry
In the UK there is more than 8000 magazines published every year. The main Publishers are BAUER who publishes 25% of the industry and IPC media who published 20%. 1.4 billion magazines are sold every year and 85% of the British population reads a magazine, spending 2 billion pounds on them every year. The magazine industry is a very volatile industry with about 500 new magazines being released every year yet only 3 out of 10 survive after the first year, so it is a very harsh and demanding industry where is it hard to judge the market.
brands that are currently big in the industry are men's lifestyle magazines like NUTS and EMPIRE or women life style magazines like NOW, CLOSER, HEAT or music magazines like ROLLING STONE, CLASH and Q. It is arguable that the female demographic dominates the Magazine industry as they are more likely to sit down as they have more uses and gratifications for the magazines, however there are a wide variety aimed at the male audience also.
The impact of the internet and new technologies such as the iPad and Android phones have had on the magazine industry is not only to transform it but also to destroy it. Many magazines can not cope with the new ability to find instant gossip and not wait for a week to receive it in a magazine. others have developed with the times and have introduced online magazines or have synergy with a webpage connected to their magazines to keep them modem and relevant. Some company are going as far as to be an exclusively online magazine and i personally think that this is the future of the magazine industry.
